“Roc Day,” or St. Distaff’s Day, dates back to medieval England and marks the first free day (Jan. 7) after the 12 days of Christmas when every woman, whatever her status, would return to her spinning. The day is named not for any saint, but after a tool used in spinning called a distaff. A distaff (or rocke in AngloSaxon) is designed to hold unspun fibers, usually flax but sometimes wool.
