Blue Open Book on White Background with Leaves on Branch with Hello Spring TextThe Friends of Claverack LibraryA portion of the $5,000 given to the library by the Friends of the Claverack Library made it possible for Professor Matthew Szydagis to give a presentation on the upcomming eclipse. Nancy Eos, member of the Friends executive committee, was in attendance on April 7 and shared what a wonderful event it was.
“I should have known, but I swear I did not. I was early for the talk, “What is a Solar Eclipse” by the SUNY Albany Physics Professor Matthew Szydagis. But parking did not exist at the library or nearby. So, I walked and found three others coming for the same lecture. They were planning to view the eclipse from 2 to 10 hours away! No one wanted to stay in Claverack where we were 95% perfect to see the event. As I learned, eclipses are a few a year, but to be in the trajectory for a 100% eclipse viewing is where most people wanted to be. Why? That is what the animated professor wanted to tell us. He had us on the edge of our seats and laughing for his whole presentation. Professor Szydagis was planning to take his family many hours from home to share the experience with them. He was more than willing to hear about others experiences and to answer questions. It was exciting to have the professor there but also to see about 50 Claverack neighbors in attendance.”

On April 8 there was an eclipse veiwing event on the lawn. The library was able to  provide glasses to members of the community as well as those who had attended Professor Szydagis’s presentation.
The Friends and Board of Trustees will offer a catered lunch from ‘Aim 2 Please’ at a “Claverack Library Volunteer Celebration” on April 20th. Invitations have been sent to volunteers who supported the library in 2023. We hope to see you there!
